How are Barcodes for iTunes different?
Barcodes for iTunes are general use UPC barcodes not different from other products.

iTunes requires that all albums have a UPC and all individual songs have an ISRC.

Audio Singles may be tracked via SoundScan for the purpose of Billboard charting by also acquiring an ISRC or an International Standard Recording Code.

ISRC codes are a simple, internationally recognized numbering system for audio and music video recordings. The ISRC, in addition to tracking for Billboard charting, also allows you to get paid for digital music sales by ensuring that your royalties are tracked properly (particularly important for iTunes).

Independent artist and record labels may obtain a Registrant Code at

How do Barcodes for iTunes work?
In short, the UPC is a 12-digit unique code for your product represented by scannable bars.

iTunes uses your UPC for marketing and tracking purposes.

Additionally, if you want to participate in the Billboard Charts, your sales must be tracked in the SoundScan system. SoundScan requires you to have a UPC number to record your album’s performance.

EPS Format - This layered, vector EPS file, generated in Adobe Illustrator, is the preferred format of most graphic designers due to its quality and versatility, particularly for resizing. EPS is an "exchange" format, not necessarily associated with one specific graphics program. An exchange format is one intended for multiple applications to be able to open.
TIFF Format - This layered TIFF file, created in Adobe Photoshop, works well for graphic artists who prefer to work in Photoshop and need a transparent background. This format is not suitable for significant resizing.
JPEG Format - This uncompressed, high-quality JPEG file, created in Adobe Photoshop, is the most common file format. However, it is not suitable for significant resizing.

What if I am selling to The Kroger Co., Macys, Inc., Wal-Mart Stores, Sears Brands, LLC or other stores that require GS1 membership?
In the case of these few retailers, you will have no choice but to lease your UPC numbers directly from GS1. These stores require that you have your own GS1 membership.

However, once you have obtained your prefix number from GS1, you can still return to us to have your digital UPC barcode images created using the GS1 numbers. You would also want to use our firm to have your master carton barcodes (SCC-14 codes) created. Large retailers generally require that you properly label your shipments with SCC-14 barcodes.
