Many exporters express confusion regarding the requirements for a UPC or an EAN code and whether or not they need a specific country code. Often exporters express concern about turnaround time. Perhaps they wonder if the barcode they currently have on their product will work oversees and if not who is responsible for barcoding the product. | |

| What is an EAN code? | |
| EAN stands for European Article Number. The EAN codes look similar to UPC codes except that EAN codes are 13 digits long. Retail products outside of North America feature a single standard EAN barcode. The exceptions to this rule are: books, magazines, greeting cards, and prescription drugs. Retail products sold within North America feature a UPC barcode. |
|
| How do EAN codes work? | |
| In short, the EAN is a 13-digit unique code for your product represented by scannable bars. EAN codes (also known as GTIN-13) appear as lines (bars) of varying widths representing the series of numbers commonly shown below the bars. Barcode scanners read the bars and convert them back to the 13-digit EAN number that they represent. When you reach an agreement with a retailer to carry your product(s), they request the information required by their unique proprietary sales and inventory tracking systems. Your 13-digit EAN number, when looked up within the retailer’s inventory system, finds the corresponding product name and price. This information helps the retailer keep accurate inventory data, review sales, and reorder. |
|
| I sell goods to the USA and Canada. Do I need an EAN code? | |
| We recommend that you use UPC codes. As of Jan 2005, all American retailers were scheduled to adjust their systems to be able to read the additional 13th digit in EAN barcodes. However, we cannot confirm that all retailers have complied with this changeover. Therefore, we recommend using UPC instead of EAN barcodes for the North American market to ensure universal compatibility. Click here to buy official UPC Codes. | |
| I export goods to companies outside of North America. Do I need an EAN code? | |
| In the past, we explained that the UPC code is 12 digits long and can be read both by UPC and by EAN scanners since the EAN system is set to accept UP TO 13 digits, making the UPC ideal for worldwide product roll-out since they can be read universally. After receiving an increasing number of reports that retailers in Europe and Asia are requesting EAN barcodes, we now suggest that you use an EAN code on exported goods. |
|
| Do I really need an EAN code on my product? | |
| Most stores have electronic point of sale (ePOS) systems that enable them to keep track of their sales and stocks and to reorder products by scanning the barcode. Most retailers refuse to accept products that are not barcoded. In addition, many distributors make use of barcodes in their warehouse systems. |
|
| What do I need to know about the standards organization for EAN codes? | |
| GS1 formerly called EAN International and the UCC (Uniform Code Council), manages EAN code standards. | |
| EAN codes can be obtained in two ways: | |
| 1. Leased directly from GS1 for a considerable initial fee plus ongoing annual fees | |
| 2. Purchased for a one-time fee from Simply Barcodes | |
| How do I get EAN codes for retail products sold outside of the United States? | ||||||
|
||||||
| We only require that you provide contact and billing information. You are not required to provide product information. | ||||||
| Your retailer collects your product information, which they associate with your barcode at the Point of Sale. | ||||||
| Note: We also accept PayPal, checks or money orders. If using one of these payment methods, please download and complete an Order Form and include it with your payment. | ||||||
|
||||||
| What if I am selling to The Kroger Co., Macys, Inc., Wal-Mart Stores, Sears Brands, LLC or other stores that require GS1 membership? | |
| In the case of these few retailers, you will have no choice but to lease your UPC numbers directly from GS1. These stores require that you have your own GS1 membership. However, once you have obtained your prefix number from GS1, you can still return to us to have your digital UPC barcode images created using the GS1 numbers. You would also want to use our firm to have your master carton barcodes (SCC-14 codes) created. Large retailers generally require that you properly label your shipments with SCC-14 barcodes. |

| How do I get my EAN codes on my product? | |
| Providing the barcode image to your graphic artist and including it in the design of your packaging prior to manufacturing is the easiest and most economical way of getting your barcode on your product. If your product packaging has already been printed, you will need barcode labels. If you would like to order pre-printed barcode labels, please select this option when ordering your EAN code. If you have already completed your order, then click label printing to order labels. All orders received before 2 p.m. EST on business days are completed the same day and shipped for free within the continental U.S. |
